Does your business have a vision?

A compelling vision pulls us forward to action. It speaks to our heart in some way, not just to our intellect or to our pocketbook. We can recognize a true business vision for ourselves because it somehow empowers us. By that, we mean that the vision somehow draws us down a particular path. The vision motivates us. For you to feel empowered by a vision means that you must derive energy from that vision.

Answer the “Why?”

An effective vision statement answers the “why” of the business, not the “what” (as in “What does your company do?"). It answers the question, “Why is your company in business?” Ask yourself, “What is the vision of my organization?” Does that vision motivate you? If it doesn’t, revise it until it does. If you don’t have one, create one.

The first step in creating your vision is to state your “greater business purpose”. This statement will answer the “why” of your business. A powerful vision was one of the driving forces behind the amazing success story of Apple Computer, a highly successful and profitable company. At the very beginning of the personal computer era, early employees of Apple were motivated and empowered by their opportunity to “change the way the world works.”

Today, Tesla’s employees are motivated by their company’s vision “To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”

Having a compelling vision can give you a sense of participating in the quest to achieve some greater purpose, something more than merely making money. This kind of vision can be a source of great strength. In fact, it can be the critical element in generating the will to persevere with a business or project in difficult times.
